Running the Setup Program
WARNING! SETUP will not work unless you have already installed
KBBS with the INSTALL program. If you have not already run the
INSTALL, do it now.
After the install program has finished, it will automatically run
the SETUP program. The install program should only be run once.
If you need to change your settings, the SETUP program can be run
as often needed.
To get your SETUP to work you need to know about your modem and
which port it is connected to. Please check your system and
modem manuals if you do not know. This information is needed:
1. The COM PORT Number (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4)
2. The FASTEST baud rate or speed of your modem. Might
be 1200, 2400, 9600, 14,400 or speeds in between.
The install program should have changed you to the "C:\KISSBBS"
directory. This is where the SETUP program resides. If you
changed the directory, change it back: type "CD \KISSBBS".
From the DOS Prompt, type SETUP and press enter. The information
above will be needed, along with some other information. The SETUP
program will prompt you for this.
One important item is the modem "init string". This is what sets
up your modem so that it will answer the phone and do other
things correctly. If you have a high speed modem (generally 9600
or 14,400 baud) you should try the HIGH SPEED INIT STRING and
slower modems should try the other one that is included. If you
are an expert at programming a modem, change this string to your
liking.
-*SOLUTIONS*-
There are only a few things that will not let KBBS handle the
modem properly:
1. Modem is installed on a different COM PORT than the
one you gave during SETUP.
2. Your modem's fastest speed is less than the one you
gave during SETUP.
3. You selected the wrong MODEM INIT STRING in SETUP.
Sometimes it is a hardware problem. Here are a few things to
check:
A. Modem is installed incorrectly. Some modems can dial
the phone but not communicate due to the phone cable
being in the wrong jack (one says line, other phone).
B. Modem COM PORT is correct but is using a non-standard
interrupt (IRQ). Normally this only happens on COM
PORT 3 and 4. Try re-installing on COM PORT 1 or 2.
C. Modem is installed on the same COM PORT as another
com device (mouse, printer, etc.) or on a COM PORT
that is using the same interrupt (IRQ) as another
COM PORT that is using a device. You can't use COM
PORT 1 & 3 at the same time, nor 2 & 4 at the same
time.
If problems A, B, or C exists, you won't be able to use your modem
with any MODEM software. If you can get your terminal program to
run using normal settings, try 1, 2, or 3 first.
Once in a blue moon, the trouble is because your modem is not
truly "Hayes Compatible." The two default init strings supplied
should work. After you try everything else, and you can get other
modem software to work, call or write about the possibility of
mailing your manual to us, to help you with this program.
TECHNICAL NOTE:
Some BBS and DOOR software requires a FOSSIL. KBBS does not
need one. If you run a FOSSIL, you must unload it before you
run KBBS.
